Most companies earn money to pay their employees by selling some kind of service or product. Make a cookie for 10 cents and then sell it for 50 cents to make a profit of 40 cents per cookie and pay your employees, and keep the electricity and water running, and market so that you can sell more cookies and maybe even sell them for a dollar a piece so you can make even more profit. As you make more money, you can afford even better cookie chefs who demand more for their salaries, and charge $2 per cookie made by said famous chef. You don't have any hiring problems because lots of people like your cookies and buy them, and lots of people want to work for such a great cookie company.
Well, my company doesn't charge for planting churches. We don't ask people to pay before they are able to hear the Gospel. We don't charge fees for Bible studies and we don't ask for credit card info before building relationships. Well, if we can't charge for these things, then how are we going to pay for things like employees, and electricity and water and marketing for more people to go and do those things? Are there other ways of earning money?
There are of course some practical things which my company does do, like purchasing land from initial capital and then renting the property to generate more income, and selling things like books and other church resources. But there is a lot of work that goes into the process of mobilization (raising up new workers), training new missionaries, and keeping missionaries on the field in a healthy and effective way. It includes a lot of employees and a lot of material things as well.
So what does one do in this situation? Looking at Scripture, we know that going to all peoples and sharing Christ is a mission that Christ has set the example for us in, and one that He commands us to do. It requires the whole church to the whole world-- every Believer reaching out to every non-Believer. Why not pool together our resources towards this effort? If some people who have money can give to organizations to do this work in church planting and spreading the Gospel, then there will be income and resources to complete this task. If we, the Body of Christ, take on the responsibility for sending people to reach out to others then the task can be done! It almost makes sense to do this if we want to see the nations reached, if we have the perspective that our "stuff" is not our own but God's, and if we realize we are ONE body reaching the lost together.

thanks for that encouragement :) i've recently been convicted that it's not just about tithing. it's about worship. and God measures our worship not by how much we give, but by how much we have left--how much we keep for ourselves.
